Meet the Hosts

John Torous, MD, MBI

Dr. Torous is director of the Digital Psychiatry division in the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. With a background in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley, he earned his MD at UC San Diego and completed his psychiatry residency, clinical informatics fellowship, and master’s in biomedical informatics at Harvard. An expert in mobile mental health technologies, he has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and 5 book chapters. Dr. Torous also serves as editor-in-chief of JMIR Mental Health.

Shruti Kochhar, BPharm, MS

Shruti Kochhar, BPharm, MS, holds a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Delhi and a master’s degree in Pharmacology from the University of Oxford. After studying Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia, Shruti transitioned into open-access publishing. She is now a Managing Editor at JMIR Publications, supporting the global dissemination of evidence-based research.

Meet the Speakers

Katharine Smith

Katharine Smith, MD, PhD

Katharine Smith, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist and clinical academic at the University of Oxford, Department of Psychiatry, and at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. She primarily sees patients with mood disorders, including treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder. Dr. Smith is the Clinical Lead at the Oxford Health Clinical Research Facility and serves as the Principal Investigator for several studies, focusing mainly on novel treatments for depression, including psychedelics.

C.Mahony Reategui-Rivera

C. Mahony Reategui-Rivera,MD

Christian Mahony Reategui-Rivera is a PhD candidate at the University of Utah, specializing in mental and global health informatics. He was part of the organizing committee for the 22nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and has recently been elected as the Trainee Representative for the Mental Health Informatics Working Group of the AMIA.

Mimi Winsberg

Mimi Winsberg, MD

Mimi Winsberg, MD, is a Stanford-trained psychiatrist with 30 years in clinical practice and 10 years in digital health. As Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of Brightside Health, she oversees mental health services for conditions like depression and anxiety. She collaborates on AI tools to improve care. Previously, Dr. Winsberg held leadership roles at Ginger and Lyra and served as an on-site psychiatrist at Facebook. She graduated from Harvard in neuroscience and authored Speaking in Thumbs (2022).

Courtney Beard

Courtney Beard, PhD

Dr. Courtney Beard is a clinical psychologist specializing in anxiety disorders and cognitive behavioral therapy. An Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, she directs the CARE Lab and co-directs the Psychology Internship Program at McLean Hospital. Her NIMH-funded research focuses on cognitive and affective mechanisms in psychiatric disorders and developing targeted treatments.

Amy Oliver

Amy Oliver, BA, MSc

Amy has an MSc in Psychology and is currently a second year Trainee Clinical Psychologist at UCL (University College of London). She has clinical experience working with adults, children, and young people in primary and secondary care services. Her main research interests include interventions to improve health equity and reduce disparities in healthcare, and trauma informed care.

Laura Marciano

Laura Marciano, PhD

Laura Marciano, Research Associate at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, leads the HappyB projects, exploring how smartphone use impacts well-being using methods like EMAs and digital biomarkers. She earned her PhD in Switzerland, winning the Italian Embassy’s best doctoral thesis award. A passionate science communicator, Dr. Marciano serves on the IBSA Foundation’s scientific board and authored Smartphone: Ally or Enemy?, advancing public understanding of digital media's effects on mental health.

Sundas Saboor

Sundas Saboor, MD, MPH

Sundas Saboor, MD, MPH, is a doctoral student in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education (HBHE) at the School of Public Health. She is a physician from Pakistan and did her MPH in Maternal Child Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Broadly, her research interests are Muslim women’s health, global health, and artificial intelligence. She is interested in using artificial intelligence techniques to identify factors that influence health behavior change for enhancing prevention strategies among Muslim Women globally.

Pamela Thomas

Pamela Thomas, MSc, MA

Pamela Thomas, a PhD Researcher at UCL Psychiatry, focuses on digital interventions for eating disorders. With an MSc in Health Data Analytics (UCL) and MA in Experimental Psychology (Oxford), she leverages her pharmaceutical industry experience in payer and consumer marketing to manage multidisciplinary teams and deliver effective public health programs.
