Q&A: JMIR Institutional Partnerships
Q: What is the JMIR Publications Institutional Partnership?
A: It’s a transparent and cost-effective open access publishing model that allows institutions to empower researchers with unlimited publishing in JMIR’s journal portfolio while reducing administration costs.
Q: How is the Institutional Publishing Fee (IPF) calculated?
A: The IPF is based on your institution's publishing history over the past two years, with a 15% adjustment for anticipated growth. JMIR provides a detailed breakdown of this calculation.
Q: What happens if my institution publishes fewer articles than expected?
A: Unused IPF funds roll over to the next year. Institutions can also request a refund or donate the rollover to Plan P, supporting open research platforms and tools.
Q: Are there any additional fees?
A: No, the IPF eliminates per-article processing fees and the 7% transaction fees typically incurred for wire transfers.
Q: What are the benefits of unlimited publishing?
A: Researchers can publish without limits in JMIR journals, with no concerns about Open Access funding or individual article payments.
Q: Is this program accessible to institutions new to JMIR?
A: Yes, new institutions can join with a flat-rate introductory IPF of $8,000 in year one. Research4Life Group A and B institutions qualify for a reduced rate of $4,000.
Q: How does this partnership support open research?
A: JMIR donates 10% of all IPF revenue to Plan P, an initiative that funds open research platforms and supports Diamond OA journals. Authors can also opt into Plan P peer review, with 50% of JMIR's associated revenue being paid back to Plan P.
Q: What happens at the end of the IPF term?
A: At year’s end, JMIR recalculates your costs. If your institution’s publishing activity is lower than anticipated, you can adjust the next year’s IPF or donate the difference to Plan P.
Q: What is JMIR Publications' commitment to open access?
A: JMIR is moving beyond the traditional APC model, working toward collective funding for Open Access publishing, ensuring equitable access and support for global research communities.
Q: How can I learn more or join?
A: Visit JMIR Publications for details or to request an institutional partnership report by emailing partnerships@jmir.org
Supporting Open Science
The JMIR mission to support practitioners and patients with validated information was born out of our founder’s frustration in accessing research on digital health issues while pursuing his medical doctorate.
Since 1999, JMIR has challenged what publishing, and publishers, can offer scholarly communications in the belief there is an aspiration shared by all our partners - creating a robust and transparent scientific discourse that is affordable and openly accessible.
Your support of independent Open Access publishers like JMIR empowers us to continue disrupting scholarly communications; pushing research protocols and preprints as a necessity (Plan P), offering open peer review of manuscripts, and tangibly rewarding reviewers for their time (Karma Credits). These are just a few examples of the innovation that publishers can deliver when beholden to authors and not shareholders.
In addition, the read and publish agreements offered by the large players often end up with libraries paying higher APCs in hybrid journals of similar quality to a pure OA title. Large portfolios are leveraged to create a closed environment when it comes to author choice, while none offer Open Access publication of research protocols as part of their transformative agreements.
We’ve been pioneering the dissemination of digital health research for over 25 years, and doing so in a way that brings accessibility and transparency to the scholarship. We hope you’ll partner with us to make the important research published by your institution as rigorous as possible and available to all!
