Dmitri

Dmitri Nepogodiev, MBChB, MPH, PhD, MFPH

Dmitri Nepogodiev is an Assistant Professor in Public Health at the University of Birmingham. Since qualifying in medicine in 2012, he has followed a unique career path that combines basic surgical and public health training, gaining global recognition as a researcher in surgical epidemiology. He is currently establishing a research programme focused on generating evidence to directly inform and influence high-priority policy areas in global health.
He co-led the CovidSurg Collaborative, a global research network that rapidly collected patient-level data from over 2,000 hospitals in 120 countries to guide surgical care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outputs from CovidSurg significantly influenced global guidelines issued by numerous national colleges and societies, including RCSEng, RCoA, RCPCH, RACS, and ASA. He has expertise in the design, delivery, and analysis of cohort studies, randomised clinical trials, and metrics modelling. In public health practice, he has worked across healthcare systems, local and central government, and academia.

Praveen

Praveen Kalra, MD, FCCP, FASA

Dr. Praveen Kalra is a board certified anesthesiologist and critical care specialist at Stanford University in California, USA. He is  a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA). His clinical and research interests include reducing the environmental impact of anesthetics and addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions within healthcare settings. Dr. Kalra was the recipient of the prestigious Sustainability Ambassador Award at Stanford Health Care for eliminating desflurane—an anesthetic gas with the highest global warming potential—from operating rooms and for leading multiple green initiatives aimed at reducing plastic and biohazardous waste. His current projects focus on decommissioning nitrous oxide pipelines in the OR, managing pharmaceutical waste, and integrating reusable supplies into anesthetic practice. As the Medical Director of Sustainability at Stanford, he drives change management and leads transformative sustainability initiatives. Dr. Kalra serves on the editorial board for JMIR Perioperative Medicine.
